Facebook … what have you done?

The latest news for the last week that has been growing into more of a panic was the release of Facebooks new user homepage. The new mini-feed allowed you to see what your friends were up to on their Facebook page without having to leave your own profile page. Many users of Facebook have protested against this calling it an invasion of privacy, while others have called it a great feature. Both sides have their points, but Facebook went about implementing it the wrong way. Basically they launched it by implementing it on everyone’s profile page with no off switch. The fear is that Facebook is turning into a MySpace clone by offering too many features and becoming a stalkers paradise. I doubt that this will occur, but only time will tell.

I can see also many benefits to Facebook that may not be useful to the users themselves. What the mini-feed also accomplishes is that it reduces the bandwith-load that would occur on each page view if you were to browse to the individuals users page. This will save Facebook tons of money on hosting costs, which I bet is a big concern in running a social network.

only the people who you have enabled to see your profile can see you? So why do you give a shit about privacy then? I think its a very good idea the “mini feed”. If you want your privacy so much stick to the stone age and write your stuff on paper and don’t use fantastic things like facebook. Damn idiots!

you’ll see that in my post that I didnt say it was a bad thing, just they implemented it in a way that caused many people to raise concerns about it. I personally like the mini feed as it helps me stay on top of what my friends are doing, but for others they tend to be alittle more security conscience.
